So I am reading Seth Godin’s new book, Linchpin, and loving the idea of us all as artists with deliverables that - if delivered - help make us indispensable in the world. It’s a mashup of many of my favorite authors, from Julia Cameron, to Pema Chodron, to Ben Zander and Sonia Choquette. It’s also a message that’s circulated for eternity in mind-body circles - that of fulfilling your potential, self-actualizing, and ACTING on your passions. Fighting the fear, the “lizard brain” - whatever you call that voice of doubt in your mind.
I’ve been admittedly slow in doing much shipping lately. Dogged by self-doubt, a hefty dose of procrastination, and excuses ranging from “gotta update this shitty keyboard,” to “where the heck am I going to get the second verse idea from” to “maybe I’m just not good enough” to write some music and share it out in the real live world with folks I love.
I gotta JUST SHIP. Something. So, I’m going to ship. Starting this week. And the only way to keep myself honest is to build a little tribe around me for support. Tribes always rescued/uplifted me, like they did during my many great Berkleemusic classes, with the friendships lasting well beyond.
So now it’s time to fly without the pressures of class, but the real pressures that real-life ideas bring. And hopefully, the real-life joy that happens when you let your ideas see the light of day. First step, secure the site…next up, some music.
As Ben Zander so eloquently put it, “Who are we being as we go back out into the world? And you know, I have a definition of success. For me it’s very simple…and it’s not about wealth and fame and power.” And as Sonia Choquette explains in her great read, The Answer is Simple, ‘you are not your ego. You are your spirit.
Maybe it really is that simple.
