Musician Wages.com posted a great piece on creating iMixes on iTunes as one more way to gain exposure for your music and build credibility for you as a music resource for your fans. Cameron Mizell, author of the post, used this technique himself and saw his own music rise in the charts as people discovered his music by checking out his iMixes. In the never-ending search for new ways to break through the clutter, Mizell shows us one more easy, free way to do just that.
Admittedly, I hadn’t thought much of using iMixes as a means of driving people to your music, but it just makes sense. Position yourself as a great resource on new music, add some of your own to the mix, and see what takes off as people sample your stuff amid the mix. Says Mizell,
You’ll notice I didn’t use this as a place to talk about myself or direct people to my website. I just want them to come across my music on their own and decide what they think for themselves. Instead, I simply shared my thoughts on this music. The only key here is to be honest and interesting.
What’s key to Mizell’s thinking here (a very 2.0 mindset) is to NOT just push your music, but to be a collaborater who can help folks sift through the endless virtual racks on iTunes and help them find some new and interesting material. It’s making connections and building loyalty - all goals that should be part of your overall marketing strategy.
And if you don’t have one of those, you should take a look at this great video from prolific music resource Artists House Music.
